The West Bengal Police arrested a classmate of the second-year medical student who had accompanied her for dinner on the night she was gang-raped outside her private college campus in Durgapur, taking the total number of arrests in the case to six.
Sources told CNN-News18 that the victim stated in her deposition before a magistrate that the classmate had also “tried to force himself on her."
This statement, according to police sources, formed one of the grounds for his arrest.
The survivor, a 23-year-old medical student from Jaleswar in Odisha, was allegedly gang-raped near her college after she went out for dinner with a friend.

She added that the men took her phone and forced her to call her friend.
“When he didn’t come, they forced me to lie down. When I screamed, they said if I make noise, they will call more men and they would do it too," she told the doctor.
Crime Scene Recreated In Presence Of Accused
As part of the ongoing investigation, the West Bengal Police brought the five previously arrested accused, along with the survivor’s friend, to a jungle near the Paranaganj Kali Bari cremation ground to recreate the crime scene.
“The accused and the survivor’s friend, who accompanied her on Friday night, have been brought to the spot for the reconstruction of the crime. The entire reconstruction will be videographed and then tallied with their statements. We will also verify this with the statement of the victim," a police officer involved in the investigation told PTI.
Police said they are verifying the backgrounds of all accused for any prior criminal history. Their mobile phones have been sent for forensic examination and some of the survivor’s classmates are also being questioned.
