'Intent To Kill': Delhi Police Files FIR Into Violence Against Cops During 'Sansad Chalo' March | Exclusive

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered by the Delhi Police that includes grave charges, including attempted murder of cops, days after the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo‘ march in the national capital.

The ‘Sansad Chalo’ march, spearheaded by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), unfolded on July 20 from Delhi’s Jantar Mantar as thousands of students joined the protests following the recent paper leak controversy linked to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2026.

Sources told CNN-News18 that the FIR includes attempted murder charges under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) Section 109(1) in connection with violence near Rail Bhawan and Parliament. 

The FIR was registered based on a complaint by an inspector posted at the Kartavya Path police station. It records the cop’s account of the violence that occurred on Rafi Marg. According to the complaint, the inspector was on duty at C-Hexagon, Zone-11 (Pink Booth), from 5 AM on July 20.

Upon receiving wireless information, a police team reached the barricades near the Rail Bhawan roundabout, where thousands of protestors had gathered.

According to the FIR, an announcement was made via loudspeaker informing the protestors that Section 163 of the BNS was in force and that the demonstration was not permitted.

Despite repeated warnings, the demonstrators did not disperse and continued raising slogans, sources told CNN-News18. 

The FIR also states that some individuals incited the crowd to break the barricades and march towards the Parliament. Protesters surrounded police personnel, assaulted them, and hurled slippers and stones at them.

The mob attacked the police personnel with the “intent to kill" them, resulting in injuries to several officers, it said.

According to the FIR, public property and private vehicles were also damaged. In the interest of the security of Parliament and other vital institutions, the police resorted to a mild lathi-charge and fired tear gas shells.

A case has been registered under 13 sections of the BNS, with the FIR including provisions related to attempted murder, assault on a public servant, obstruction of duty, unlawful assembly, rioting, damage to public property, and endangering human life.

As many as 129 police personnel and over 60 protesters were injured in the clashes on July 20.

The development came even as activist Sonam Wangchuk –– who had been on an indefinite hunger strike to push for the demands made by the CJP –– said Friday that he had been assured by the Centre that no action would be initiated against the protesting students.

Wangchuk broke his fast at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Friday in the presence of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh.

How Incident Unfolded

Sources told CNN-News18 that during the attack by the mob at Jantar Mantar, DCP (IFSO) Vineet Kumar and ACP (Rajouri Garden) Sharat Chand sprung into action and saved the life of ACP (Connaught Place) Vivek Bhagat during an attack on him.

DCP (IFSO) Kumar arrived at the scene with his team to rescue ACP Bhagat, who was surrounded by a mob, and successfully brought him to safety. During the rescue operation, a miscreant within the crowd attacked HC Rahul, an operator with the IFSO unit, with a knife, causing an injury to his abdomen.

The injured cop was immediately rushed to the hospital, where timely medical treatment saved his life. The incident suggests that armed miscreants may be present among the protesters.

Just a day earlier, weapons had been recovered from the bags of two individuals during a police check at Jantar Mantar.
