iPhone 18: Apple to introduce variable aperature camera

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Max is set to become the first iPhone to feature a variable-aperture main camera, according to an internal diagnostics log uncovered within files linked to a cybersecurity breach at Tata Electronics, Apple's manufacturing partner in India. The team at Notebookcheck found an internal diagnostic log buried inside the files from the Tata leak, and it points to calibration data for a variable aperture main camera. Apple has not commented on the leak, and the details remain unofficial ahead of the company's expected September unveiling.

What leak revealsThe leak points to a new Sony IMX905 primary camera sensor, which retains the same 1.22-micron pixel size as its predecessor but introduces variable aperture support a mechanism long standard in DSLR and mirrorless cameras but never previously used in an iPhone. A variable aperture would allow the camera to adjust how much light reaches the sensor depending on lighting conditions, opening wider in dark environments and narrowing in bright ones to prevent overexposure, while also giving users greater control over depth of field. Currently, all iPhone Pro models use a fixed aperture, meaning any background blur is produced algorithmically rather than through the lens itself. This means the upgrade centres on the variable aperture feature itself rather than a larger sensor, addressing cases where digitally simulated blur can appear exaggerated.

Rest of camera system largely unchanged

Despite the aperture upgrade, the rest of the camera setup is expected to remain largely the same, with the phone continuing to use the same telephoto, ultrawide, LiDAR and front-facing sensors as the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the telephoto camera retaining its three-axis stabilisation system. The claim is not new: a report in April had already suggested the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max would gain variable aperture support and had entered production, a claim later reinforced by additional leaker sources.

The feature may not come cheap. Industry reports suggest the average selling price of variable-aperture lenses has risen by 50% this year, a cost increase that could influence the retail pricing of the iPhone 18 Pro series. Design changes elsewhere appear modest: leaked images suggest the overall iPhone design will remain largely unchanged, though the phone's thickness may increase slightly to accommodate a larger battery.

A mechanical variable aperture would mark one of Apple's most significant camera hardware shifts in recent years, potentially narrowing the gap with high-end Android rivals that have offered similar functionality for several product cycles. For a Pro Max model that has increasingly leaned on computational photography for creative effects, genuine optical control over depth of field and exposure could represent a meaningful, rather than incremental, upgrade.

With Apple's iPhone 18 Pro series expected to be unveiled in September, further leaks are likely in the coming weeks covering pricing, the Pro model's camera parity with the Pro Max, and additional details from the ongoing scrutiny of the Tata Electronics files. Official confirmation, however, will only arrive once Apple formally unveils the device.
