Emma Raducanu says she is in no hurry to appoint a new full-time coach as she looks to rediscover the aggressive, instinctive style that propelled her to Grand Slam glory.
The 2021 US Open champion has worked with several coaches in her young career, most recently parting ways with Francisco Roig after a six-month partnership.
Now 23, Raducanu says she wants to return to playing “in a way more similar to when I was younger", a mindset she first voiced following her second-round loss to Anastasia Potapova at the Australian Open.
Trusting a Familiar Face
Rather than rushing into another appointment, Raducanu is continuing to work with hitting partner Alexis Canter, a 27-year-old former British player.
“Right now I wouldn’t say I’m actively looking for a coach," she told The Guardian. “I have Alexis in my corner. He knows me as a person. He knows me as a player and I’ve actually had some success with him in the past year. So it’s going well."
She added that her focus is on repetition and sharpening fundamentals.
Encouraging Signs and Setbacks
Raducanu recently reached her first final since her fairytale run in New York, advancing to the title match in Cluj-Napoca before falling heavily to Sorana Cirstea.
However, that run came at a cost. She contracted a virus that lingered for weeks and hampered her performances during a tough Middle East swing, where she exited in the first round of two events.
“I had really long effects for the last three weeks," she admitted. “The Middle East trip was very difficult for me."
Eyes on Indian Wells
Despite the setbacks, Raducanu remains world No. 25 heading into the prestigious Indian Wells Open, which begins March 4 in California.
Her priority now is regaining full health and rediscovering the bold, attacking instincts she possessed earlier in her career.
