Spain's World Cup triumph over Argentina completed an unprecedented feat, making La Roja the first nation ever to hold both the men's and women's World Cup titles at the same time.

Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final helped them complete a feat no nation had ever achieved before.

By lifting the men’s World Cup at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, La Roja became the first country in football history to simultaneously hold the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup titles.

Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner sealed Spain’s second men’s World Cup crown, ending a 16-year wait since their iconic triumph in South Africa in 2010. Three years earlier, Spain’s women’s team had defeated England 1-0 in Sydney to lift its maiden World Cup title at the 2023 tournament, a crown they will defend in Brazil in 2027.

Together, those victories have placed Spain in uncharted territory.

A Feat No Nation Has Managed Before

Only two countries — Germany and Spain — have won both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cups. But Spain is now the first to hold both titles at the same time.

The women’s World Cup, first staged in 1991, has produced only five champions: the United States, Germany, Norway, Japan and Spain. Sunday’s victory ensured Spain became the first federation to reign over both sides of the global game simultaneously.

The men’s triumph also came with added rewards. Alongside the World Cup trophy, Spain collected a record $50 million winners’ prize and became the first champions to receive commemorative championship rings, another innovation introduced at the expanded 2026 tournament.

A Golden Era Built On Dominance

Spain’s success is no coincidence. It is the product of one of football’s strongest development systems, led by La Liga and supported by clubs that continue to dominate both domestic and European competitions.

Real Madrid remain one of the world’s most successful clubs, while Barcelona has become the heartbeat of Spanish football. The Catalan giants have long supplied the core of both national teams, with the women’s side winning three of the last four UEFA Women’s Champions League titles.

Spain’s dominance extends well beyond the World Cup. The women’s national team captured back-to-back UEFA Nations League titles in 2024 and 2025, while the men’s side added the 2026 World Cup to their UEFA Euro 2024 triumph.
