S. Janaki memorial, music study centre to come up in Mysuru: Hamsalekha

A programme was organised in Mysuru on Wednesday to remember legendary playback singer S. Janaki, who passed away here recently.

Music composers, singers, well-wishers, fans and members of S. Janaki’s family attended the event – S. Janaki Namana, where the iconic singer was remembered with tributes highlighting her immense contribution to Indian music.

Speaking on the occasion, noted music composer Hamsalekha announced that a memorial—S. Janaki Dhyana Mantapa—along with a music study centre, will be established in Mysuru. The project, estimated to cost between ₹10 crore and ₹15 crore, is expected to be completed within the next two years.

“In two years’ time, all roads for music lovers and musicians will lead to Mysuru,” Mr. Hamsalekha said.

Recalling S. Janaki’s enduring legacy, Hamsalekha, for whom the legendary singer rendered several memorable Kannada songs, said her countless admirers were committed to preserving her memory through the memorial.

He said funds for the project would be mobilised through contributions from her fans, musicians and well-wishers. As an initial contribution, ₹5 lakh will be donated by the Musicians’ Association and another ₹5 lakh by Raj Events.

“The project requires substantial financial support, but we are confident of receiving contributions from S. Janaki’s fans and the music fraternity,” he said.

Mr. Hamsalekha added that the detailed project plan and other aspects of the memorial would be announced later. “Our aim is to create a centre where music flourishes and people from across the world come to celebrate S. Janaki’s legacy and the art of music,” he said.

Veteran actress Bharati Vishnuvardhan, former minister S. R. Mahesh, S. Janaki’s family members and people who were her caretakers in Mysuru and others attended the programme.
