A Bengaluru-based artificial intelligence startup is getting lot of attention in the global tech landscape by challenging big players like Google and ChatGPT with its own home-grown AI models tailored to India’s linguistic diversity and real-world needs.

Sarvam AI, led by co-founder and CEO Pratyush Kumar, has rapidly emerged as a standout in India’s AI ecosystem, developing foundational technologies that are not just locally relevant but competitive with international counterparts.

“At a time when the global AI race is dominated by Silicon Valley and Beijing, Sarvam AI’s progress proves India’s tech talent and innovation can compete on world stages,” said a tech industry analyst. The company’s models are optimised for Indian languages and contexts — an area where many global tools still struggle.

One of Sarvam’s breakthroughs is “Sarvam Vision”, an optical character recognition (OCR) tool that has outperformed leading models on challenging documents — a crucial capability for digitizing India’s diverse paperwork. Its Bulbul V3 text-to-speech model now offers natural voice synthesis across multiple Indian languages at a fraction of the price of global alternatives.

Pratyush Kumar, who co-founded Sarvam AI along with Vivek Raghavan, has a long history in AI research and Indian language technology development. Under his leadership, the startup has focused on building sovereign AI systems designed and grown in India, for India — while maintaining global benchmarks for performance and usability.

Experts say this approach could reshape how generative AI is deployed in countries with linguistic and cultural diversity, offering a local advantage that massive international models often overlook. By focusing on practical use cases for Indian users and enterprises, Sarvam AI is positioning itself not just as a competitor, but as a pioneer in accessible and inclusive AI.

According to Times of India, Sarvam AI is “giving Google and ChatGPT a run for their money,” highlighting how agile startups from emerging markets are now playing influential roles in the future of artificial intelligence.
