Tamil Nadu witnessed a historic moment in its political history, as Vijay took office as the Chief Minister, the first non-Dravidian government in the state after more than five decades. The actor-turned-politician contested and won two seats – Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (East) – during TVK’s blockbuster debut in the recent election.
After taking the oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay formally resigned from Trichy East, retaining Perambur as his main constituency. The dual candidacy was designed to maximise Vijay’s chances of securing a seat and expand his political influence beyond Chennai.
