'They Yelled, Screamed': Trump Revives Claims Tariff Threat Forced India-Pakistan Truce

The US President also repeated his broader claim that he had helped end multiple conflicts during his presidency.

US President Donald Trump on Friday again claimed that his tariff threat forced India and Pakistan to end their military confrontation during Operation Sindoor last year, saying both sides were “very angry" before agreeing to stop fighting.

Speaking to reporters at Camp David, Trump said, “We ended the India-Pakistan (war). Eleven planes were shot down. That was raging. That was good. I used tariffs. I said, ‘If you’re going to go to war, 250 per cent tariff.’ Each of them."

Trump claimed that India and Pakistan reacted strongly to his warning. “And they screamed and yelled and were very angry. They were both angry about it. A day later they called and they said, ‘We will not go to war,’" he said.

The US President also repeated his broader claim that he had helped end multiple conflicts during his presidency. He said Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had told him that his intervention saved millions of lives by preventing further escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Trump also claimed that 11 aircraft were shot down during the conflict. A claim that has been been strong rejected by India.
