Uber, Ola, Rapido services hit in Hyderabad as cab, auto drivers go on flash strike

Thousands of autos and cabs attached to various app-based cab-booking services stayed off the roads in Hyderabad on Wednesday, with the Telangana App-Based Drivers Forum (TADF) calling for a flash strike in the State.

This has resulted in a sharp drop in the availability of cabs, increasing fares by up to 30-50 per cent. People going to the airport and office-goers have been hit by the strike. 

The union’s have demanded that the Government and platform companies fix a fair minimum base fare, along with just per-kilometre and per-minute rates for all app-based transport services.

They wanted the State government to immediately notify the Gig and Platform Workers’ Rules and constitute a Welfare Board.

“The Government must implement minimum fares under the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025, instead of allowing aggregator companies to unilaterally determine fares,” Shaik Salauddin, Founder President of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU), said.

The protest represents app-based cab drivers, auto drivers, goods auto transport drivers, delivery workers, and other gig workers associated with Ola, Uber, Rapido, Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, Blinkit, Porter, and other digital platform companies.

“We sincerely apologise to customers for the inconvenience. However, app-based cab drivers, auto drivers, goods transport drivers, and delivery workers have been left with no other option,” he said.

“Since platform companies and the government have failed to resolve our long-pending demands, we are compelled to observe the Statewide Breakdown Flash Strike,” he said.

The unions also extended their support to the proposed indefinite strike after 8 August 2026 if the Government and platform companies continue to ignore the legitimate demands of gig and platform workers.
