Udgam School introduces AI-powered face recognition attendance system

Udgam School estimates the initiative will save nearly 66,000 collective student hours each year by reducing time spent on administrative tasks

In a significant step towards AI-enabled school administration, Udgam School for Children in Ahmedabad has introduced an AI-enabled face recognition attendance system across 91 classrooms, replacing conventional daily roll call with real-time, classroom-level attendance recording.

The initiative has been designed to make attendance more accurate, time-efficient and parent-responsive. Under the new system, a student’s attendance is recorded as the child enters the classroom. Each face scan takes about 3 seconds, and attendance entries are updated directly in the school’s ERP system, enabling teachers and administrators to view class-wise attendance information instantly.

Focus on efficiency and student monitoring

Besides marking attendance, the system helps the school identify repeated late-arrival patterns over time and take corrective action against the student.

With a student-teacher community of about 6,230 and over 220 working days in a year, the school estimates that the move could free up nearly 66,000 collective student hours annually.

Real-time updates improve parent communication

The real-time ERP update is expected to improve school-parent communication as well. If a child has not reached the school or classroom within the defined time, the system can support a verified follow-up process, helping parents receive timely, reliable information rather than relying on delayed manual reconciliation.

Manan Choksi, Executive Director, Udgam School for Children, said the newly introduced system helps save valuable teaching time, improve the accuracy of attendance data, better understand late arrivals, and communicate with parents more responsibly. Most importantly, it allows teachers to spend less time on repetitive administrative tasks and more time with children, he said.

“If a child enters the school premises but reaches the classroom late, the system helps the school distinguish between absence, late arrival and delayed classroom entry. This allows teachers and administrators to respond with greater clarity,” he added.
