There is rapidly becoming one unavoidable truth in this playoff series: the Minnesota Timberwolves simply do not have an answer for Victor Wembanyama.
The San Antonio Spurs superstar delivered another terrifying postseason performance on Friday night, powering his side to a 115-108 victory in Minneapolis and handing San Antonio a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference semifinal series.
The 7-foot-4 phenom finished with 39 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks, but the numbers somehow still failed to capture just how overwhelming he looked down the stretch.
Wembanyama erupted for 16 fourth-quarter points, repeatedly crushing Minnesota’s momentum whenever the Timberwolves threatened to make a push.
From the opening minutes, Wembanyama turned the paint into restricted territory. Minnesota missed its first 12 field-goal attempts as the Frenchman swatted shots, altered drives and forced the Wolves into uncomfortable jumpers all night long.
Wolves Fight Hard But Go Down
Anthony Edwards, returning to the starting lineup after battling through a knee injury, looked much closer to his explosive best.
Edwards poured in 32 points along with 14 rebounds and six assists in an outstanding individual effort. But every big Edwards moment was met with an even bigger Wembanyama response.
The game grew increasingly nasty after halftime too. Tempers flared midway through the third quarter when Jaden McDaniels and Dylan Harper collided chasing a loose ball, sparking a heated exchange that briefly pulled multiple players into the chaos.
Still, San Antonio never truly lost control.
Even after Wembanyama picked up his fifth foul with over six minutes remaining, allowing Minnesota to close within a single point, the Spurs calmly steadied themselves. Back-to-back late threes from Wemby ultimately slammed the door shut.
De’Aaron Fox added 17 points for San Antonio, while rookie Stephon Castle impressed again with 13 points and 12 assists.
Now, with Game 4 looming in Minnesota, the pressure is firmly on the Timberwolves.
