After almost eight months away from competition, Neeraj Chopra is finally inching closer to a return — but not before completely rebuilding his body first.
The 28-year-old from Panipat hasn’t competed since finishing eighth at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo last September, the first time since his historic 2020 Summer Olympics gold-medal triumph that he failed to finish on the podium.
More significantly, Chopra hasn’t actually thrown a javelin in competition since that night in Tokyo. Instead, the past several months have been all about recovery, rehab, and restraint.
With the 2026 athletics season already gathering pace ahead of marquee events like the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, Diamond League meetings, and the World Athletics Ultimate Championships, anticipation around Chopra’s comeback has only intensified.
Chopra’s Recovery
According to TOI, Chopra’s rehabilitation phase is now nearing completion after prolonged struggles with groin, ankle, and back issues that affected both his preparation and performances over the last year.
“After the Tokyo Worlds, Chopra realised that recovery had to become a top priority," a source told TOI. “He had been carrying groin and back problems for a while which affected both his preparation and performance."
His 2026 preparation has included extended training camps in Potchefstroom and Antalya.
During his camp in Turkey, Chopra reportedly worked heavily on modifying his throwing mechanics, particularly the “blocking" phase: the landing movement after release that puts enormous stress on the body.
“It was not the throw itself causing problems," the source added. “The stress came from the landing and the way he blocked his body after release."
To reduce strain, Chopra has also replaced long-distance running with sprint-focused training while refining his overall throwing pattern.
When Is Chopra Set To Return?
Originally expected to return at the Doha Diamond League on May 8, those plans were disrupted after the event was postponed to June 19 due to the ongoing West Asia conflict.
Now, potential comeback events could include the Irena Szewińska Memorial in Poland on May 29, the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland on June 3, the Golden Spike Ostrava on June 16, or the FBK Games in the Netherlands on June 21.
For Chopra, though, the bigger picture remains crystal clear: defending his Asian Games crown in Japan and building toward the 2028 Summer Olympics.
