'False, Misleading': Delhi Police Fact-Checks Videos Claiming Nail-Fitted Batons Used On Protesting Students

Several videos and images circulating on social media claimed that police used batons fitted with nails to disperse protesters and bring the situation under control

Videos circulating on social media showing that cops used batons fitted with iron nails against students during yesterday’s protests are “false and misleading“, said Delhi Police on Tuesday, adding the visuals are not related to the said demonstration.

The clarification came a day after a massive student protest erupted in Delhi over alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2026 examination. Several videos and images circulating on social media claimed that police used batons fitted with nails to disperse protesters and bring the situation under control.

Reposting one such clip on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), the Delhi Police cautioned the public against circulation of fake news on social media. It also urged citizens to refrain from sharing unverified claims and information.

“The videos circulating on social media alleging that police used batons fitted with nails during yesterday’s protest are false and misleading. These videos are not related to yesterday’s protest", the statement read.

“Citizens are advised not to spread unverified information and to verify facts before sharing or forwarding content on social media. Appropriate legal action will be taken against individuals found spreading rumours or misinformation", it added.

About The Protests

The protests –– led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) –– commenced at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Monday to demand accountability from the government and seek the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Amid the demonstrations, a delegation of the CJP met with Union Health Minister and senior BJP leader JP Nadda at his residence to discuss the issue.

CJP representatives Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka touted three key demands before the minister: 1. Compensation for the families of students who allegedly died by suicide after the NEET paper leak, 2. The resignation of the Union Education Minister and 3. The release of activist Sonam Wangchuk.

Sources told CNN-News18 that no assurance or commitment was given to the CJP. Instead, Nadda asked them halt the protest and cooperate with concerned authorities to restore normalcy in the affected regions.

‘Guide Them To The Right Path’

Addressing a key huddle of the NDA floor leaders at the Parliament today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged his fellow lawmakers to “guide the students to the right path, and not incite them".

He said the youths were being “misled". “It is easy to go on the wrong path, but it is much more tougher to come back onto the right path, and we have to bring them on the right path. That is our responsibility", PM Modi said.

Meanwhile, a government source told CNN-News18 that the government was willing to hold a discussion with the protesting students and that it was “not averse to talking".
